What is an RSS Feed?

No, it’s not a bag of food for your pet RSS. :)

The initials “[tag]RSS[/tag]” actually stand for either “Rich Site Summary” or “really simple syndication” (both are correct).

But in essence, RSS is one of the newest web formats to distribute information. It’s a really cool, really easy way to consume content you enjoy.

Many websites (including our FlippingHomes.com blog) now syndicate their content through RSS to whoever wants it, and more are jumping in the RSS bandwagon every day.

What does this thing mean?

You may recognize having seen the universal feed icon or these “chicklets” one some of your favorite Web sites, blogs and podcasts. These little icons represent content in any format — text, audio or video — to which you can subscribe and read/watch/listen using an RSS feed reader.

Why is RSS Good?

RSS solves two key problems inherent with web content distribution…

  1. First, it allows you to stay informed by retrieving the latest content from your favorite websites without having to actually visit them (a huge time saver, for sure)…
  2. …and second, RSS helps you protect your privacy by not having to give out your e-mail address to join each website’s newsletter.

In our case, subscribing to the RSS feed of the FlippingHomes.com blog will give you a direct pipeline to quickly access any new blog posts. However please keep in mind that our “Flip Tips” newsletter is (at this moment) still delivered via email only. We may put an RSS into place for it soon.

But the bottom line is you can subscribe to our RSS feed for blog post updates. You can subscribe in the upper right-hand corner here for our “Flip Tips” email newsletter.

How to Subscribe to an RSS Feed…

There are two main ways through which people subscribe to RSS feeds:

  1. A feed reader program that resides on their computer, or
  2. through an internet based RSS reader service.

Some popular feed readers include Amphetadesk (Windows, Linux, Mac) and NewsGator. Additionally, the newest versions of the most popular web browsers (Microsoft IE, FireFox and Opera) now have integrated feed reading capabilities. There are also a number of web-based feed readers available. Bloglines, My Yahoo, and Google Reader are among the most popular.

How to subscribe to the Flipping Homes RSS feed…

If you are new to RSS, we recommend that you try either the Google Reader (my personal favorite) or BlogLines You’ll find both to be intuitive and easy to use as an RSS newbie. In the end, you should choose a poison that suits you best.

On the other hand, if you’re an already avid RSS subscriber, just use your fav RSS reader:
